This one exceeded expectations, although I regret not seeing it on an IMAX screen. Hanks was excellent but a little older than I imagined the Captain Krause of the Forester novel. Most of my little complaints with the film stem from having just read the page-turning classic, e.g. why didn't they just keep the original boat names? -- was an unnecessary distraction. Anyway, the best thing this film/book achieved for me was a vivid and patriotic depiction of a slice of naval operations during WWII -- my dad as a commanding officer on various ships was to the best of my knowledge in situations like these from time to time during the war. Second time viewing this dark masterpiece by David Cronenberg. Viggo Mortensen is a natural resource. The title is pregnant with truth and the film laden with the power of the subtext from beginning to end. There is no non-crucial supporting acting here as well, including stellar performances by Maria Bello, Ed Harris and William Hurt. First movie in the Jack Ryan franchise. Working through them for fun. This one has aged well. Sean Connery struck me as fairly comatose until the last scene. A young Alec Baldwin was a pretty darn good Ryan. Definitely recommend. It's a good ride overall.  https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0099810/

As Peter Bradshaw from the Guardian put it, this shaggy-dog stoner LA noir may be the Coens’ comic masterpiece. I really enjoyed it the second time around. Good thriller. Jodie Foster was nominated for best actress for this one -- I miss her on the big screen -- she was a fine presence and carried this one. Kristen Stewart in an early role was credible. Forest Whitaker was predictably good as well. One of those ones definitely worth seeing again, although the ending was a bit of tidy dud.  https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0258000/  

Good, fast-paced Afghanistan war flick. Not a happy story -- eternal recurrence of the same. This one from Scorsese is really dark. Great performances all around and a tight script. Hard to believe De Niro did not win an Oscar. It was his most demonic role ever and in a league with Joaquin Phoenix's Joker. Nolte and Lange were excellent as well. Juliette Lewis, who was also nominated for a supporting role, was perfect as the rebellious teenager almost seduced by the villain. Second viewing. Haunting existentialist film by the Coen brothers who won the Oscar for best screenplay. Frances McDormand earned best actress for her unforgettable portrayal of a cool, pregnant local detective. William H. Macy was excellent as a pathetic car dealer.
